Urban renewal Hessenberg Nijmegen Hans van der Heijden
The low-rise parts enclose collective green inner courtyards that function as the building's natural lungs. The inner dwellings have a direct relationship with the courtyard, fostering social interaction between residents. We give Duet’s ground floor an open, extrovert nature. The inner square in the plinth brings the dynamic of a city square inside and makes for a lively entrance area. The result is a wide range of distinctive facilities for health care, government, education, research, community and business. European architectural award for healthcare environments awarded to Radboudumc’s new Main Building. The award was given in the category ‘Excellent healthcare project of more than 40,000 square metres’, with the jury paying particular attention to the interaction between people and the building. The Hessenberg has been extensively published in such magazines as Architectenweb Magazine, De Architect, Architecture Today, Midcomfort, Bauwelt and Architectenweb Magazine. The project received the Municipal Architecture Award of Nijmegen 2011 and was nominated for the Mies van der Rohe Award and the Fritz Högerpreis 2011. Ramps run up to the rooftop park, making it accessible for locals from various points in the neighborhood. Plenty of daylight, views of courtyard gardens from everywhere, and striking through views make every space pleasant. Hans van der Heijden based the design on plain facade principles. We redesigned a former law office into a luxurious cityhouse, combining the characteristic elements of the building’s rich history from 1908 with modern materials and luxury. The modifications on the ground floor are subtle and made with respect for the building’s heritage. By incorporating high-quality materials such as marble and oak, we created a warm and stylish living environment. Dynamic levels of lighting play an essential role in creating a pleasant and healthy indoor climate. Working and recovering in natural lighting conditions – all day long – supports the biorhythm and is crucial for physical and mental recovery. Stepped outpatient clinics, reception areas and the restaurant are located behind a glass facade, which smoothly transitions into a glazed roof. Natural light pours in from all sides, and every space offers views of internal courtyards and rooftop gardens. Unexpected sightlines make every room feel open and pleasant.

With an urban living room, a café, atelier space and other functions, it’s where residents meet. Flowing into a leafy public square and the multi-level landscape outside, Duet joins up with the green corridor and the wider city scape in a continuous flow of spaces. A key element is our cunning transformation of the huge parking garage required by the brief from a potential eyesore to an asset, by using it to add an expansive rooftop park that further weaves Duet into its green surroundings. Their all-sided design connects with the different scale levels of the historic center of Nijmegen and the surrounding landscape. The relationship with the landscape is emphasized by greenery running through the plinth in the facade. Wooden elements and the implementation of vegetation along the entire front give the buildings a high-quality, sustainable look. Transform any piece of content into a page-turning experience. International architecture prize for the Radboudumc Main Building. The Hessenberg has been extensively published in such magazines as De Architect, Architecture Today, Midcomfort, Bauwelt and Architectenweb Magazine. The dimensions, spatial layout, and architectural typologies of De Waalhoven embrace the landscape as a starting point. Near the Oversteek bridge on the northern side of the Waal, the urban architecture is brimming with communal spaces for sports — a skate park, among others, forms a welcoming entrance to the development. The complex height differences of the site were a leading aspect in the design of the ensemble of tower volumes.
